The Great Unfriending

Since when did Facebook begin to hold such power over us in our lives? It is a website, a phone app, yet it has the power to crush and humiliate.  I speak from personal experience.  In the last week, I have been unfriended by my dear sister in law for who knows what reason...We haven't shared a word on there for a few weeks.  I only noticed that I hadn't seen pictures of my niece in a while, so I went to her wall.  Guess what?  She was gone...No wall.  It makes me sad how easily people can dispose of you on Facebook.  Squishing you under their feet like a used cigarette.  I've been unfriended before by my husband's brother.  TWICE.  He just doesn't like me.  And when he decided he wanted to be my friend again, my husband councils me to just accept his friendship to avoid confrontation and trouble.  So there I am floating on the tides of other people moods.  And you know what?

Recently I was involved in a Football discussion which turned personal.  What the crap?  I was supporting a decent Christian player who was being dogged because he was a Christian.  In another discussion, I was lambasted as a bigot and told I was full of hatred because I defended the sanctity and sacredness of a marriage between a husband and wife.  Anyone who knows me well, knows that I have a pure heart and that I RARELY jump into conversations that would be deemed controversial. I am very sensitive to criticism, drama and negativity.  I just felt passionately about what was going down. At this point, I regret my involvement because my self esteem has been crushed.

When did something that was such a positive thing in my life become so negative?

So I am hereto unfriending Facebook and flipping it the bird effective the end of this week.  I want to be able to pass on contact information to those that truly matter first.

Facebook has become a thorn in my side.

  1. Wow. I've been unfriended, but not by anyone who is currently in my life. I also don't get involved in religious or political discussions. It's just not my thing. I'm sorry you've been experiencing this nastiness.

  2. That stinks. I swear if I didn't know better, you were my sister-in-law discussing our other sister-in-law. Are you sure she didn't just delete her account? I have thought before I was defriended (besides the time I have been defriended) when friends ended up deleting their accounts.

  3. Well, you know I have similar drama. I was "unfriended" by my sister-in-law because I talked about Christ and Scripture too much. My husband was "unfriended" by her as well when she didn't appreciate a news story he posted. Really?! Are we that childish and immature?! Apparently. It seems that Facebook is starting to bring out the worst in people. They are braver with the security of the internet. C'est la vie.

  4. You know, I have "hidden" people (family members) whose posts I don't want to see. That way they don't think I don't like them and I don't have to see their stuff. I can't imagine just unfriending family members. That causes all sorts of hurt feelings. I don't blame you for not wanting to be jerked around. It isn't nice.

  5. I've considered leaving Facebook a few times because of the drama. It can be crazy making.

But I've reconnected with some good friends from high school who are spread across the country. I don't want to lose that.

I hope it's working out for you.

  6. I just unfriended 12 people. No bad feelings about them, I'm just cleaning up my page. I enjoy interacting on Facebook. These few really didn't want to interact. Well... c'mon people! It's a SOCIAL network. It's not about obligation. I still have a phone, a home address, an email, and even a front and back door to knock on if you want to chat : )

  7. My niece just unfriended me too! I have no idea why, but you're right, it does hurt. My husband keeps reminding me that she's a teenager, but she's going on 18...

Always happy to hear from you! Comments make my day, just please keep them uplifting and positive. Thanks for stopping by!
