Why yes, hell did freeze over...

It's true! Over Christmas break, hell did freeze over. I live amongst a family of skiers and snow boarders. I've skied....Been there, done that...It's cold, it hurts, I suck...Hell would have to freeze over to get me up on a mountain to ski again. But, for Christmas I received a nice ski coat, pants and gloves. My excuse for being cold and unstylish, I am that vain, was gone. I would be totally warm in my new gear. Caught up in the excitement of my family, I reluctantly agreed to go up to Bogus Basin.

I remember the last time I skied thirteen years ago. I spent more time on my back sliding backwards down the hill than I did on my feet. I'm sure I was pretty comical to look at giving more than one person a reason to laugh. I was determined not to make a fool of myself this time, and I definitely didn't want to get hurt. You know I am 40! I warned my peeps to snap a picture as this may have been the first and last time they would see me on the slopes. Alas, they did not heed my warning and no pictures were snapped. Really, who wants to take a picture of their mom when they are teenagers. They were more than likely snapping photos of the cute girl sitting next to them on the lift.

I have perfected sliding down the hill on my butt, and backwards on my back. Chanting "I'm not going to fall, I'm not going to fall..." really doesn't work. I tried...On the plus side, I am very proficient on the bunny hill. I can do that without falling. I do fall getting off of the ski lift, though. What a loser!

And to prove I went up, here is the one picture I snapped from Bogus with my phone.  It is called "The top side of fog."

  2. Visiting from SITS. Never been skiing, but I'm sure I would just fall and hurt. Beautiful pic though!

  3. Did you try chanting it louder and with different intonations?
Congrats on getting out there! I'm not sure I ever will again.
    Just stopping by from SITS.

  7. I always think I would love to get back on the mountain and then I remember how sore I used to get after a few falls. Adding ten years is definately not going to help that.

  8. Good for you!! I have swore off skiing and snowboarding too even though I live in CO. People think I'm crazy, but I would rather ruin my knees running than on the slopes. Maybe I will change my mind some day when I get stylish gear. totally worth it!

  9. You are 40? No way, I don't believe it!

Nothing like getting some new gear to hit the trails in style! :)

PS: I wanted to reply to your comment about Avatar on my blog...I posted it in my comments, but wasn't sure if you go back & read those...

The majority of my extended family is very conservative politically. When I gushed that Avatar is a movie they must see, if even just for the visual elements & amazing special effects, they were surprised.

    There are plenty of other Hollywood movies with similiar themes (military: bad, humans: bad). {If I had the time, I'd list 'em here...}

As with books and movies, there are many levels of meaning we can take away from them, it just depends.

I say go and see Avatar anyhow. Enjoy it for the entertaining eye candy it is. Leave the politics at home. You can still enjoy it. (even on DVD later!)

    :)

  10. I'm so glad you didn't get hurt skiing! I am so with you on the vain thing. If I'm going to fall down A LOT on a mountain, I need some hot new gear to do it in. DUH!

    Beautiful picture!

  11. I have never been skiing, ever. I would probably spend the day on my butt.

  12. Beautiful pic.

I couldn't ski until I realized that it had nothing to do with the poles. They are mostly unnecessary and distracting unless you are on tougher slopes. It all has to do with the hips and but and thigh muscles. Good for you for trying again though!!!

  13. Hey, here from MMB!
I have to laugh because there is a ski area in my neck of the woods called snow basin. I thought you were spoofing it and calling it bogus basin! Then I clicked on the link! Too funny that that's it's real name!

  14. I love it! I haven't skied in years and years. I did do cross country for a number of years, but I just can't get into it anymore. I'm proud of you for trying it out!!!! Congrats on your new gear!!!

  15. Bogus Basin, hmmm? I lived in Idaho my whole life and NEVER skied once. Nope, not once. It wasn't until my family briefly moved to Alaska, and I met my husband-to-be, that I finally braved the slopes...on a snowboard. So, I still have yet to ski. Oh, well.

    Love the picture!

  16. I came over from Mormon Mommy Blog-
Fun post! To bad you have no pictures of you skiing...just gives you an excuse to go up again, right? We live in the Treasure Valley too, so IF I skied we would go to Bogus. Fortunately (for everyone) I have no new and cute ski clothes to motivate me to try skiing.

  17. Just wanted to say that my first skiing experience was IDENTICAL to yours-- 2 hours down the mountain, on my butt. Second was only slightly better. There will never be a third if I can help it.

  19. ohhh can we please ski together? I don't fall getting off the chair, I did that once and the people were so mortified and so was I that, is the only thing I have perfected. It would be fun!!! LOL, I say, I better look cute on the slopes since I can't ski. But, ideally I would rather sit in the lodge sipping hot cocoa!
