An open love letter

Cut backs are every where. It is just the way things are dealt with in this economy. I work in the educational system and cutbacks are hitting for the second year in a row. Rumor has it that next year there will be even more. There isn't much left to cut! To me, cutting education makes no sense, because we are not investing in our children and our futures. But, I've said it, it's out there, I'm done....Work has been difficult. Jobs are being cut, friends will be having to leave. I know this is no different than in any other field.  We, as employees, were asked for our input, to rate the electives...To choose a different model for the school. It felt like having to choose between friends. I didn't like it. So I am hereto writing an open love letter to our economy.

Dear Economy:

When you were strong, you were so attractive.  I really got excited when things were going well.  I was content and happy in our relationship.  I feel like things have been strained recently between us.  What can I say?  I miss the old us...I'm really tired of seeing good friends lose their jobs. It kind of sucks! I'm tired of driving through a neighborhood and noticing so many foreclosure homes. It's really sad and feels like a ghost town around here. Where is everyone going? I'm tired of living the life of a roller coaster the ups and downs and twists and turns. Quite frankly, I'm beginning to feel a little nauseous. What are you trying to prove?  Can't we just go back to the way things were, you know, before?

Just to set the record straight, I want to thank you, economy, for my job and my husbands job. I know we have been truly blessed. But, if you feel an inkling to improve A LOT, that would certainly be alright with me...I miss you!

  4. Cut backs are hard. My company has been going through them too. This time it's due to the economy, but it is also part of the cycle because of our funding. I have been through a lot of them through the years and it's never easy even when you aren't the one leaving.

It is sad that teachers are part of the cut backs. Education is so important.

    Hang in there....

  5. I just wonder where all the tax dollars are going. We pay a huge amount of taxes, and superintendents and administrators make big money. The schools are run down, and falling apart. It disgust me on so many levels.

I send my children to a private school, yet I pay for the public school. Everyone has to pay for the public schools, so there is NO excuse for the schools being in the condition they are in today.

The nearest public school to us allows the parents to give donations to the school, and many do. They are rebuilding the school because they have been given so much extra money from the parents.

I understand that not every school could come up with extra money for their school and to pay the teachers a bonus.

What is so sad is the amount of money that is paid to athletes and actors, and the little bit of money that is paid to our teachers. Why not have a percentage of the entertainment industry kick in to contribute to education? A percentage of the television shows, movies, and games should go to schools. Many of the children that are suffering from a lack of education find the funding for these recreational activities...why not give back to the people that support them?

  6. we were hit by unemployment for 11 months, it was through much help that we survived. I've learned so much, and we thought we were self reliant. Reliance only came when my husband had a job. We are employed once again and digging ourselves out of a hole but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
so sorry you are seeing good friends suffer and worry.

  7. My husband was freaking out over the economy even when it was going well.

Educational cuts are bad, and there are worse cuts that are made to social services and foster care. These are the places I don't mind having my tax dollars go to!
