A National Treasure

I recently held in my hands a National Treasure.  Working at a school, often affords me opportunities that I might not have had otherwise.  Our Science teacher, who is a National Treasure unto himself, (don't tell him I said that...he's retiring this year), requested Lunar samples from NASA.

I held in my little hands samples of dirt and rock from the moon.  Although they were well encased in a protective cover, it was still pretty cool.  It is unfathomable to me to think that I held something from our moon.  I know we look out at it every night, but someone actually went there, collected samples and brought them back for me to hold in my hand.

When I was in elementary school, I had it in my head that I wanted to be an Astronomer when I grew up.  Even though I grew up and did not become an Astronomer, I still find it quite fascinating.

  1. Very cool. It's hard to fathom the rocks and its origin and how far it traveled and the people who could conceive that dream!

  3. :) I'm like you. I am fascinated by things that are from far away. I love to see bits of rocks that floated around in space... although I guess we are ALL floating around in space... hmmm. :) very cool.

  6. That is pretty awesome! What a great experience. The most amazing thing I ever got to hold [through my job also] was a $600,000 bar of gold. Though, I think a moon rock is probably better...gold is pretty commonplace, moon rock isn't.
